SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE NEXT MEETING – SUNDAY, JULY 27, 10 AM PARISH CENTER
We launched the Saint Peter Parish SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE (SPP-SJC) on June 22 with Father Americo and a wonderful group of parishioners.
Opening with a prayer to the Holy Spirit to guide us, we explored ways that each one of us has been called to this Ministry. We also acknowledged other activities in the Parish creating a foundation for our work, including the Saint Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Society, Ukrainian Welcome Circle and other humanitarian works.
After discussion, we agreed that our proposed Mission is to strengthen our commitment to Catholic Social Justice by EDUCATION, AWARENESS, AND COLLABORATIVE ACTION FOR CHANGE.
First, we need to understand the rich tradition of Catholic Social Teaching, beginning with Pope Leo XIII (our current Pope Leo XIV’s inspiration), in his encyclical of 1891, Rerum Novarum. We can draw on local Scholars at Boston College, Emmanuel College, the Seminaries, and other Catholic institutions, and can learn from Scriptures and Papal Documents. We can also build awareness about the heartbreaking poverty facing many people in Cambridge and beyond, especially Immigrants. Next, we need to explore what kinds of Volunteer Activities are appropriate and relevant for our Parish, and PRIORITIZE those that are appropriate and relevant for our Parish to adopt for now.
