Medicine for Cuba
Collection of medicines for the poor and needy in the Diocese of Santa Clara, Cuba. This collection is a request of Bishop Arturo Gonzales. Bishop of Santa Clara who is a friend of Fr. Americo and who will be visiting Saint Peter Parish at the end of May.
The reality for the Cuban people is becoming increasingly complex, more than ever. Specifically, it is becoming much more severe in medicines, where it is difficult to find any medication, from analgesic for a headache to antibiotics for a serious illness.
In the Diocese of Santa Clara, various “dispensaries” exist where, through doctors and trained personnel, the sick and needy are assisted, and medicines are given to them. Fortunately, these dispensaries are located at Catholic charities in that Diocese, which is why the Cuban government approves them. At the dispensaries care for the sick is provided but in the same location other various services are provided for the elderly, people with disabilities, the homeless, single mothers, etc… Services are to all of them without regard to origin, religion, or political affiliation.
These dispensaries/Caritas houses depend entirely on the Catholic Church and donations from institutions abroad. The dispensaries are run by volunteers and by doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists, and other people who provide services at different times of the day freely. They do not receive payments for their service.
The dispensaries are located: Solidarity Heart in Santa Clara, Diocesan Caritas Office in Santa Clara Diocesan Caritas Office in Jicotea, Diocesan Caritas Office in Esperanza, Diocesan Caritas Office in Santo Domingo, Diocesan Caritas Office in Sancti Spíritus
The project consists of collecting medicine that could be purchase in stores without prescription. Basic medicine that can be given to people there. The medicine will be sent to Miami Florida to a group of people organized as “Santa Clara Friends.” Once they get the medicine in Florida, they sent the medicine to Cuba by boat. Financial contributions to this project are well received too. So, the medicine can be bought in Florida then sent to Cuba.
If you would like to participate in this Lenten Mission, please purchase only the medications listed below and hand to a parish staff member at weekend Masses, or drop off at the parish office Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM.
